We have different treatment options for each of these different types of venous disease, depending on the cause. In general, it is better to treat the larger veins first to prevent more small veins from forming after the laser treatments to the spider veins. Treatments for the larger veins include surgery, ablation, and sclerotherapy. The best technique used to treat spider veins involves laser treatments. At our office, we use the AURA laser system. This laser is both effective and relatively pain free.

Most treatments with the AURA laser system last about fifteen minutes. During your initial consultation, we will be able to estimate the cost of your treatments and tailor the treatments to your needs. As always, the initial consultation is free.

About the Procedure
Laser vein removal is surprisingly fast, easy, and effective. The laser light achieves vein removal by destroying the vein without burning the skin above. The laser will shoot a concentrated beam of light that passes through your surface skin and is preferentially absorbed by the hemoglobin in the vein. When the light is absorbed, it is converted to heat. As the vein is heated, the walls of the vein collapse and thus blood flow is stopped. Over the next three to eight weeks, the vein is absorbed by the body and disappears.

The use of the laser for vein removal requires knowledge and expertise. Our staff is trained to use the AURA laser system with the proper settings for your particular skin type and vein size. Typically, an anesthetic spray or ointment is used prior to treatments. During the treatments, you may feel a slight tingling or warmth as the laser fires. The skin above the veins will have a reddish appearance for two to three days, and the change to a cat-scratch appearance. This generally disappears over the next two to three weeks.

You can expect to return immediately to your normal activities, with a few restrictions. Compression stockings are important after treatments, especially when treating the lower legs and ankles. Elevation of the treated areas will enhance the treatments success. Also, you must avoid strenuous exercise, running, and lifting, to avoid excess blood flow and elevated venous pressure in the legs, which may cause the veins to open back up. Also, avoid soaking in hot water for one week. This causes vasodilation, and serves to increase blood flow as well. A complete list of post-procedure instructions will be given to you and discussed prior to leaving after the procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these vein treatments permanent?
The removal of spider and reticular veins is not an exact science. Most patients achieve a significant reduction in the appearance of their veins and are very satisfied with the treatments. Patient adherence to the post procedure regimen is important to optimize results. Facial veins seem to do consistently better, while veins on the lower legs and ankles, due to the pressure from gravity, seem to do less well overall.

Are the treatments painful?
Most patients describe a tingling sensation during the time the laser is firing. We do use topical anesthesia to minimize discomfort, and ensure patient comfort during treatment.

Are the treatments safe?
As discussed in the introductory information, there are a few uncommon risks associated with both laser and injection vein therapy. These include pigment changes, blistering, scarring, pain, and unsatisfactory results. Additionally, your eyes will be shielded during all treatments.

How long do the treatments take and how many treatments will I need?
Each treatment session generally lasts fifteen to thirty minutes. We can treat a significant number of veins during that session. Typically, you can expect to need two to three sessions, spaced 12-16 weeks apart, to achieve the appearance you desire. Of course, you can stop treatments at any time or continue with additional treatments should you desire.

How much do the treatments cost?
Our fees are based on a time schedule, listed below. During your initial consultation, which is always free, we will estimate the number of treatment sessions you will need in order to give you an idea of the cost.

Time Cost
0-15 minutes $100
16-30 200
31-60 300
61+ 400

What else does the AURA Laser Treat?
The AURA laser system is also used to other conditions that have a vascular component, or it can be used to treat some pigmented lesions. This would include strawberry hemangiomas, moles, some scars with a reddish tint of increased blood vessels, rosacea, warts, and broken blood vessels.
